If a client has issued a 'reserve' or 'reserve-with-timeout' command, is
it possible to abort that operation so as to send some other command?
Or would my code have to create a new client connection to issue another
command?

I'm thinking of a simple scenario where I issue
    reserve-with-timeout tube_name 30

and then decide I want to issue:
    stats

before going back to blocking on a new job.
