I've written a java client, it doesn't implement the full protocol,
but its based on SocketChannels so is dramatically faster then the
JavaBeanstalkclient.  I have been meaning to release it but haven't
had time yet.  I have been using it in production for a couple weeks
handling ~ 10 million jobs a day.

I can send you the java files if you're interested.  I was planning on
lgpl but would be happy to do apache license as well.
