Just seen the discussion in the following post:

and the feature request #2 and the following pull request:
https://github.com/kr/beanstalkd/pull/180

These affect beanstalkd itself. I suppose I could roll my own version of 
beanstalkd by merging in the pull request and giving it a spin. It would 
definitely be a better solution than the one I propose below (if it works 
:))
