the publisher, John Murray, and promoting various A. Conan Doyle books
including The Complete Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, The Sherlock Holmes
Long Stories, The Conan Doyle Historical Romances I, The Conan Doyle
Historical Romances II, and The Conan Doyle Stories. Two different
photographs of A. Conan Doyle also appear in the booklet. An invoice dated
3/11/35 from Goodspeed's Book Shop in Boston is also present and provides
the cost of this book when sold in 1935, and a promotional card is also
laid-in which details the book by H. W. Bell, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor

Rathbone films. Sixteen photos of Rathbone in a variety of Holmes's films,

1). the medical knowledge of Dr. Watson, 2). their chemistry, anatomy, and
pharmacology. Watson's practice; his service in the South African War; and

London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1920. First edition. Spine lightly
sunned, else very good in attractive pictorial front cover. Queen's Quorum
65 says "... the young monocled private detective "with a round, ingenuous,
very agreeable face.... a neatly trimmed moustache"....the inquiry agent, as
he preferred to call himself." One of the stories is a parody about Dr.
Watson in which Sherlock Holmes is present, but invisible. Queen says this

6. DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN. HANDSOME PAIR OF SEPIATONE MATTE-FINISH 8" X 10"
VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF BASIL RATHBONE AND NIGEL BRUCE, EACH INSCRIBED TO THE
SAME RECIPIENT BY RATHBONE AND BY BRUCE, RESPECTIVELY. [ca 1943]. The Bruce
inscription is dated 1943, and it seems reasonable to assume that the
Rathbone inscription dates from the same period. The photograph of Basil
Rathbone is a half-length portrait of the handsome actor, complete with the
thin mustache he favored in private life, in a coarse tweed jacket and
checkered tie, leaning forward against a white studio prop with a
spotlight-like white shape breaking the darkness behind him and giving the
portrait a fine, slightly art deco look. The photograph of Nigel Bruce is a
soft-focus head-and-shoulders portrait, in one of the country tweed jackets
that he wore both on camera and off, with a spotted bow tie. These are two
of the most attractive photographs of the great film portrayers of Holmes
and Watson that we've seen, in fine condition and elegantly inscribed with

This story was first published in Chamber's Journal December 6, 13, 20, and
27, 1890. The book edition, in Danger! And Other Stories [1918], includes
many changes. This pamphlet restores the original text. With an afterword by
Daniel Stashower. Fine in printed wrappers. Published to recognize Arthur
Conan Doyle as Ghost of Honor at Malice Domestic XII, May 5-7, 2000. $25.00
