1. The Civil War Ward/Burns PB tear close to binding on front cover 1991$5
A glowing companion volume to the celebrated PBS television series that
is informative and poignant. After exhausting research in museums,
libraries, and newspapers, 475 images were selected to show readers what
people, places, and events looked like during this crisis that shook the
foundation of American civilization. The text that accompanies these
illustrations is often the voices of the men and women who lived it.
Extensive use of diaries, letters, and newspaper accounts bring the world of
the 1860s to life. Five Civil War historians provide essays that add a third
dimension to this fascinating work. A selected bibliography that includes
some of the most noted works on the Civil War and a complete index are
included. The book can be used as a companion to the PBS series or as a
valuable resource on its own. It should be included in all Civil War
collections.

This book is worth the time just for the beautiful pictures but the real

Revolutionary War. How fortunate his children were to be taken to the
various sites and told about the characters who set our country free.

9. Texas and the War with Mexico (American Heritage Junior Library) 1961 HB
FC cover wear/binding breakage $3
Amazon review: The American Heritage Junior Library was published mostly
in the Sixties but these informative and marvelously illustrated volumes
still hold up today. "Texas and the War With Mexico" covers both the war for
Texan independence, with the massacre at the Alamo and the battle at San
Jancinto, along with the Mexican War and its major campaigns and
engagements. Even in 1961 when this particular edition was printed the
foreword to this volume could note that to most people of the United States
the Mexican War was a dim, mildly disgraceful incident from the nation's
past (Would it be considered the Vietnam of the 19th-century or would that
distinction go to the Spanish-American War?). However, Fairfax Downey makes
the case that even without answering the question of responsibility for the
war and deciding whether the United States was the aggressor or if Mexico
provoked a tolerant nation beyond endurance, the annexations of Texas and
the Mexican War resulted in the United States adding enormously to its
territory (California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Wyoming, Colorado, New
Mexico, and Arizona). The Mexican War made Zachary Taylor President and gave
invaluable military experience to the young officers who would be the main
generals in the Civil War: Ulysses S. Grant, George H. Thomas, George G.
Meade, Robert E. Lee, Albert Sidney Johnston, Joseph E. Johnston, and Thomas
J. Jackson.
However, "Texas and the War with Mexico" is clearly not a glorification of
the military might of the United States. The book draws a strong parallel
between the example of Nathan Hale's death in the American Revolution with
the veneration accorded by the Mexican people to "Los Ninos," the boy cadets
who gave their life in the defense of Chapultepec. Downey deals with the
story of the war from both sides and provides a much better sense of how the
war was actually fought than young readers will find in their standard
American history textbook. The book makes excellent use of paintings and
other illustrations from the period. There are several paintings presents as
two-page spreads, a woodblock of Davy Crockett falling at the Alamo, dozens
of primitive paintings down by soldiers and sailors, and one of the first
daguerreotypes ever taken of American soldiers in wartime. You might be
surprised at how much art depicting the Mexican War was done during this
period. There are portraits of virtually every major figure talked about in
the book. In the end Downey reinforces the idea that the Mexican War was
"the most unjust war" the nation had fought, quoting Grant as the expert
witness on that score, but also points out that this acquisition of
territory meant the country stretched from sea to shining sea and that the
idea of "Manifest Destiny" sprang from this period.

 10. Indians and Cowboys 2 in 1 book Sanfort Tousey HB 1941 PC corner broken
off cover aged $3
American Indian Tribes, Blackfoot, Sioux, Crow, Comanche, and Cheyenne,
belonged to a group knows as the Plains Indians.
The Cowboy of our western plains is more at home on horseback than afoot. In
fact, so much riding makes him bowlegged.

11. The United Nations (Franklin Watts) Edna Epstein 1966 HB VGC $5
Explains the essential facts about the activities of the United Nations
in clear and simple language and shows the way in which the Organization is
linked to our everyday lives. As such, it is a valuable introduction and
should find a wide and appreciative audience.

12. D-Day The Invasion of Europe (American Heritage Junior Library) HB 1962
GC with shelf wear $10
A story not simply of great victory in war but one of the outstanding
human achievements of all time. How it began on D-Day, the sixth of June,
1944, will be understood as these pages unfold. Because there is military
glory enough in what happened on that day to warm the American heart through
several generations, I prefer to think of it as a superb human effort that
dared and achieved the impossible. The task was infinitely larger than any
that men had tried in former times, and we may be sure that we will never
see its like again, such are the limits set on bold adventure in the atomic
era.

13. The Living White House Lonnelle Aikman (White House Historical
Association) PB VGC $5
A brief history of the White House, containing anecdotes of visitors,
events, and the First Families from Presidents Adams through Carter. Tells

how they have lived, worked, and entertained here since 1800.

bring this time to life.

15. The Story of Mankind Hendrik Willem Vanloon HB 1972
History is the mighty Tower of Experience, which Time has built amidst
the endless fields of bygone ages. It is no easy task to reach the top of
this ancient structure and get the benefit of the full view. There is no
elevator, but young feet are strong and it can be done. -Hendrik Van Loon,
in the Foreword to The Story of Mankind It was intended for children, and of
course much of the science is hopelessly out of date, but this ambitious,
even audacious attempt to offer an overview of the entirety of human history
remains a breathtaking work today.
