Graphis 117 Vol. 21 Cover: Flavio Constantini; Article About Saul Steinberg
Graphis Press Corp, 1965. Paperback. Clean & unmarked except for previous
owner's name on inside front cover.

This item is a very rare VG copy of Graphis, the International Journal of
Visual Communication, for everyone involved in graphic design and visual
culture.

9.25 x 11.75 magazine with 88 pages of b/w and color examples of modern graphic
design, circa 1965. Graphis was (and still is) one of the most important and
influential European graphic design publication. Each issue always showcased
the best graphic and applied art, including advertising, typography, posters,
printmaking, illustrators, book arts, ethnic art, etc, with a focus on modern
European designers. Graphis is still being published, but the most influential
and groundbreaking years are from the 1940s to the mid-1960s.

These periodicals are much harder to find than the well known Graphis Annuals,
which are essentially pictorial “best of” collections and lack the depth and
text of the originals. These publications are also more valuable as they are
the original documents. Many of the articles are written by important artists,
critics and scholars.

Graphis was first published in 1944 by Walter Herdeg in Zurich, Switzerland..
In 1986, B. Martin Pedersen was given the opportunity to purchase Graphis.. He
has since further developed the magazine and books and relocated the
headquarters to New York City. Graphis has upheld its reputation as the premier
publication covering graphic communications worldwide and has been revered for
its artistic presentation, impeccable design, and exemplary production
qualities. Global in scope, Graphis is a compelling record of the most
significant and influential communication work being produced today

In visually driven articles, Graphis beautifully presents the best work
produced internationally in graphic design, advertising, illustration, and
photography. After issue #355, Graphis Magazine ceased to exist in its old
format. These older issues are destined to become collector’s items.
