Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not too savvy with Python yet so I'm not
too comfortable with writing my own plugin.
However I was able to get something working with the Inline plugin:
item_fields:
nodots_album: album.replace( '.', '' )
nodots_albumartist: albumartist.replace( '.', '' )
nodots_title: title.replace( '.', '' )
The I just refer to the new variables in my path definitions. This seems
to be working nicely.
