Actually, this works: 
%if{$original_year,$original_year,$year}

In the past I had issue with it, maybe I was using it wrong, but  I just 
dug it up and tested and it works.

    default: $albumartist/%if{$original_year,$original_year,$year} - 
$album%aunique{}/$track - $title
