Is there any chance the Unix permissions are just wonky on the source or the 
destination directory? You can try:

$ ls -la '/Users/alan/Downloads/Imagine Dragons - Night Visions [UK Deluxe 
Edition] (2013) - FLAC/'
$ ls -la '/Users/alan/beets/music/Imagine Dragons/Night Visions/'
