That’s an interesting question. One tactic you might use would exploit the fact 
that m3u playlists are (usually) just plain text files with paths to music 
files in them. For that reason, a crazy pipeline like this might work:

$ xargs -d'\n' beet modify category=special < list_of_paths.m3u

I haven’t tested that, but if you read up on xargs’s docs, you might be able to 
turn it into something that actually works. :)
