My recommendation is pick up "Object Oriented Perl" by Damian Conway.
Packages are typically best done as objects, and this is the definitive
reference on how to create any sort of object class.
There are links to OOP on online bookshops available from
http://learn.perl.org/ (down the bottom of the page; it's the last book
metnioned).
