Hey Luke,

I would have to agree here. I was kind of pushed into learning vi
(had to admin an AIX server). Boy, am I glad I did, it is by far my
favorite editor. I now install Vim (www.vim.org) on every machine I
use. However, I also use www.TextPad.com too.

Friday, July 06, 2001, 4:47:02 PM, my MUA believes you used
(X-Mailer not set) to write:

LB> You know at the risk of starting a huge flamewar here (tho I doubt
LB> it'll happen - people seem really reasonable on this list) I'm
LB> going to put in my $0.02 for not just learning vi, but becoming
LB> fluent with it:

LB> 1. It's universally available.
LB> 2. Once you really learn it, it is the fastest editor out there. However,
LB> learning vi takes patience and practice. My two suggestions for becoming
LB> a vi wizard are these:

LB> Go "cold turkey"
LB> only use vi for text editing on every system you use.

LB> Perfect practice makes perfect
LB> don't manually insert 20 lines of #-characters to
LB> comment out a section of perl when :25,45s/^/# will do.

LB> The latter is true of anything worth practicing (i'm a professional
LB> musician) and it applies especially well with vi (or other text editors)
LB> You need to always ask yourself when learning "How can I do this faster,
LB> or with fewer keystrokes?" Instead of holding down that arrow key to move
LB> to the 5th line down, hit 5j. Or use markers to leave a trail through a
LB> long document. After forcing yourself to think twice before editing, the
LB> commands will seem like second nature, and you'll get editing tasks done
LB> much quicker. You'll begin to wonder why people even waste their time
LB> with a mouse to edit text.

LB> One side effect of using vi and perl is that you get a double dose of
LB> regular expression experience, and you'll find yourself inventing ways of
LB> doing boring repetivive tasks either entirely in vi or with vi and perl
LB> combined. That's when things get real fun :-)

>> I've listen to you all about the editors problem
>> Is anybody out there still using the old bottom-dweller vi ?
