stdlib.h isn't installed?! As far as I know that isn't even Suns code,
rather part of SysV. If that isn't there then something must be terribly
wrong and I'm surprised everything else on the box works.

stdlib.h should be installed with the default 'end user' distribution as
far as I know since so many parts of the system depend on its presence.

Try installing Perl manually and see if that makes a difference since it
could probably find and use the gcc stdlib.
