My first experience with this list is neatly summed up in the "The Way We
Were" section of the article by Casey.
But I did have the added bonus of being called a liar.

This was a comment on code that was tested, it worked and the person I
helped thanked me for the working code, but I was asked not to lie by
someone who did not even investigate the original posts. (yes I know dead
horse but a good example).

My sin was that I was not a perfect coder.

What kept me coming back to this list however, and what kept me from jumping
ship to python or ruby was the support I received from numerous other
contributors (Mike, Ray, Paul and Peter to name but a few) who were shocked
at the treatment I received from some of the more "respected" members of
this list.

And I'm very thankful to them.

But as a perl beginner I had a very rude awakening, and day after day I see
other newbies get almost the same treatment.

To them I want to say: Hang in there, ignore the preaching posts and use the
teaching posts.
