You understand correctly. However, your post was (imho) condescending in nature. This is normally ok (when coming from the Perl Gods), but you didn't give the OP any indication at all that he may find better help elsewhere. Unfortunately, not everyone reads a list AUP prior to posting, and some will start with an incorrect list because they don't know where else to start, but most do move along if given a proper nudge. I like a liberal list policy, where if an initial post is well defined, explained clearly, and it is obvious that the poster has put decent effort into his troubleshooting prior to posting, that the message is worth a read, and it is worthwhile to help out where possible.
