I can't reproduce this behaviour with any of my ActiveState (or other)
builds of perl - and I have quite a few.
For me the direction of the slash is faithfully reproduced.

There was a bodgey build released at about that time, that should be avoided
at all costs .... and, if my memory is correct, that bodgey build was, in
fact, build *816*.
The latest ActiveState build of perl-5.8 is 827 - which I have. It certainly
doesn't switch the backslashes around. I would install it over the top of
build 816. (Build 827 is perl-5.8.9, not 5.8.8 - but they're binary
compatible, so you can install "over the top".)
