Point taken. It has been a while since I looked up the FAQ, so I may be
slightly out of line.
However you may have noticed that I did not reply to the OP's OP. In my
opinion this is a much
better way to deal with OT posts. My point, and I believe that we both
agree, is that rudeness on any public forum
should only be tolerated to a degree (for the sake of efficiency). It is
not my place to discourage inappropriate communication between posters on
this forum and I apologize for doing so, but I would much rather back this
point up than to encourage the chewing out of novices. It is intimidating
enough trying to post a valid question that might be looked upon as
"retarded". If you support the type of attitude that has been exhibited
than you will be making this mail list a lot less...welcoming.

I mean sh!+ if I was new (and I am) and I began monitoring this list and
just kept reading "go away" or "do you know how to use a search engine" or
"go look somewhere else", I know I would be hesitant to post anything (and
I am...just not this time). And I guess that would be great for you gurus
out there who are tired of reading the same stuff over and over
again...this is the beginners Perl mailing list, there are bound to be
dumbass questions or off-topic questions from people who may not know
enough to categorize their questions appropriately.

<nods> (wait a minute...i thought i said that...ah...emphasis on
"RUDELY"...semantics...i meant the same)

>On the other hand, people should
>be mature and thick-skinned enough not to take rebuke pesonally and learn

so for example i could tell you something one of 2 ways:
"Hey friend, you spelled 'their' incorrectly, it is actually spelled
'their', have an awesome day!"
or
"Hey jackass, you're a big retard" - (didn't even bother to refer the OP to
dictionary.com) (<grin> none of that - pesonal)
(obviously I don't know the rules of borderline vulgarity on this list,
hope i don't get kicked off...)

<nods>. I only think that "beginner's" mail lists should be more
tolerant. And besides I think the rudeness bothers more people than the
dumb questions (okay - off topic). I would put less energy into letting
the novices "get away" with their evil and destructive Off-topic
questions. why the hell not "be nice"? (<smiles>...better, see?)

sure, but there are good ways to "not reward" OT questions. the easiest
way is to ignore.

I haven't, that would be a real downer.

Ah-Looooooooooo-HA! (Originally from Kalihi Valley). My apologies to all
the people who have to read all this and delete it (wasted time), I know
there are more important things to do; but writing all this was the most
important thing for me to do at the time. Please to not feel the need to
take the "last word" away from me, unless you are backing my
ideas. <grins> Mahalo!
