But in general, in India ,Java programmers are more in demand. Even a not-so-bright java guys earns more than a bright perl guy. ( But then how long will you be doing actual coding ? ) In my opinion There are areas or strength of every language. It will be ideal if you , and the company you are in can mix different languages. For example if I have to write a mime-parser I would choose perl. If I have to write an index search tool I would use java , just because lucene is best implemented in java.
