pack() is difficult to understand, and most of the time, unneeded. I suggest you skip it and come back when you have more experience.
Also, I suggest you get a syntax-highlight editor. It will highlight keywords like substr so if you accidentally type in subst, you can tell you made an mistake because it's not highlighted. Check out Padre: http://padre.perlide.org/
