YW. TIMTOWTDI -- system calls or otherwise. More importantly, there is more than one style of Perl programming. I find Perl especially useful for "quick and dirty" shell scripts (e.g. instant gratification). And, I keep the more useful ones around and improve them over time (e.g. upgradability).
