that is a unix problem and can't be done in any language.

It's not even a UNIX problem. Windows and BSD have it too. It is an
artifact of how files are created and maintained.

vms had line oriented files where you can do this. effectively it was an indexed file. bsd is a unix and i say linux is one too. the problem is true of all flat file systems.
