How about pinging several hosts that have a pretty good chance of being up. www.microsoft.com, www.netscape.com, www.ibm.com, etc, etc. You could also ping your local gateway address. If all fail (except for the router as the link may be down beyond that, but if the ping to the router fails, then you are definetly without connection) then you could assume you've lost connection.
