I have no experience with Japanese, but have recently started investigating how to use Perl and unicode. What I have discovered so far is that the module for utf in Perl 5.6 is unreliable and that I need to update my Perl to version 5.8. Since I am on Windows NT4.0 I first need to upgrade to service pack six. Might I recommend the "Perl and Unicode" tutorial by Simon Cozens, available at http://www.netthink.co.uk/downloads/unicode.pdf <http://www.netthink.co.uk/downloads/unicode.pdf> as your starting point.

I am developing some perl scripts that have to process Japanese characters and print out Japanese characters. We use to save the files in Unicode when it has some Japanese characters. But when we compile it or execute it with perl, we got the error message "bare character found". Can anyone help us to solve the above problem? We want to have have Japanese characters in our script and the script should print Japanese characters. We don't have any Japanese OS system and so we want the above functionality in Windows 2000 English OS. We have installed the Japanese fonts in our system. Any help regarding this would be a great help. rgds, vinai
