It pretty much tells you why when you compile it: print (...) interpreted as function at E:\Perl\source\xx.pl line 1. syntax error at E:\Perl\source\xx.pl line 1, near ")[" Essentially the parentheses following 'print' are assumed to contain its parameter list.
