Kevin, Thank you very much for pointing out that the beginners Perl list is accessible as a newsgroup, and can be read through newsgroup readers including Google. Many of us were not aware of that. The newsgroup name is "perl.beginners", and the CGI beginners' group is perl.beginners.cgi.
I still do not understand why the person who put together the archives site you originally mentioned did not see fit either to make it searchable or to mention the newsgroup names.
