    Because you're in essence doing this:
    
    ${ $overdata }{$key}
    
    When you access a hash value, you're getting a scalar, which is why you
    use a $. Perhaps this notation would be clearer:
    
    $overdata->{$key}
    
    I believe the arrow notation is more common in practice than the
    double-$
