I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for a book that would suit me. I find books that assume no programming knowledge to be slow-moving and often boring. But the next step up seems to be the type of book that assumes proficiency with one or more other languages. I've got some familiarity with other languages -- I've had to learn to read simple C/C++, Java, and assembly language code (movl.org, anyone?) -- but no significant experience doing programming.

So...what book(s) would you suggest for the relative newbie with a clue?
