let's try the question the other way around.
Which books have you read so far, and what is it in them that you are not getting your head around?
A part of the problem can be that you are new not only to Perl but to 'coding' and/or 'software development' as well - and hence there are general ideas that will seem fundamentally 'strange', and let's be honest folks, "UN-NATURAL".
First off all coding languages are 'formal languages' and hence have to be formalizable, this is why they are by definition 'not natural languages'. So the question then really is what part of the 'formalization' are you having problems with?
