Hi again,
I would like to build an unthreaded versions of Perl v5.8.1 for Mandrake 9.2 using a src.rpm and install as /usr/local/bin/perl.
I would imaging I need to remove the USE_ITHREADS compile time option. Since I'm new at doing this I don't know where to start.
That sounds about right, normally you would specify a prefix of /usr/local to affect the installation, though I *believe* that is the default install, though not likely for a .srpm.
I could use as much advice as your willing to share. Or a source I should be reading. :)
My advice would be to ask in an RPM related forum, particularly where building packages from SRPMs is discussed, you may get better/more help of how to do this specifically with an SRPM as I don't know how to affect the various compile time options needed using that method. For me I would rather just build and install Perl from the regular source, but I have never been big on package managers, they seem to get in my way more than help. Sorry I don't feel this probably helps much, and not suggesting you are OT, but no one else had replied yet :-)...
