This is bit complicated for beginners on-list discussion. Have you tried comp.lang.perl.misc? Your best bet, though, is probably going to be looking at code that does something similar. Take a look at the source of e.g. Parse::Yapp and see how they implemented. Better yet, see if you can use a cpan module to accomplish this, instead of reinventing the wheel.
