Hi list,

Hello and welcome...

I am a database administrator(oracle) wanting to learn Perl for
scripting and administrative purposes.

Ok.

Can you please suggest some book(s)/sites for learning Perl. How long
does it take to learn Perl, given that I have maintained some Perl
scripts for a year - not much work, but I can say I have seen them.
Also, I have been a programmer for several years.

http://learn.perl.org is a good place to start. Most people would recommend Learning Perl from O'Reilly as *the* place to start followed by Programming Perl, and the Perl Cookbook from the same publisher, and then the sequel Learning Perl Object, References, and Modules. Since you are specifically interested in Oracle workings you might want to have a glance at Programming the Perl DBI though the documentation for DBI is excellent and the book certainly isn't necessary. This isn't an ORA plug as there are other excellent books, but these are usually considered the best places to start.

I have downloaded Perl for Windows. I hope it is not much different
from the Perl for Unix (used at work).

If you are interested in having a similar setup on Windows to a unix box, you might consider Cygwin. Otherwise ActiveState's distro is generally considered the best, to my understanding. Someone with windows experience should chime in if this isn't correct....

Thanks.

Good luck,

p.s. you can read my thoughts (whatever they are worth) about the above books and others (not from ORA) on my site.
