Though I still think if you have the time and desire to learn a database, starting with a server isn't a bad idea, but there is more learning curve in the matters Chris mentioned.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've only used SQL through Access, but found it easy to understand.
However, the server this currently sits on doesn't and won't ever (not through choice) have any form of SQL so I'll just have to struggle with the files. :)
