I apologize if this posting is not specific to Perl usage, but I'm doing some research on "standards" for handling unknown date values (e.g, when a complete date is not known). I work in an industry niche (cancer registry and public health data collection) that does not follow ISO 8601 for electronic display of dates in YYYY-MM-DD form. This industry niche has a unique business rule that applies a value of '99' for an unknown month of day and a value of '9999' for an unknown year.

I would like to learn of other nuances for handling unknown date values in other industry niches. Please feel free to email me your examples directly. Thank you.
