Socket or IO::Socket doesn't care where is the client and where the server. You can use both to connect to a program that runs on the same computer, on a computer in the same rack, the same building or halfway across the world. In either case these modules are too low-level, you'd better use LWP. Either LWP::Simple or LWP::UserAgent, depends on your needs ... if you need more detailed control, use the LWP::Agent.
