Your problems are because the tilde, '~', is not a valid initial field
character. You must use @  for the first character of a regular field.

It looks like you want the text in $adj_desc displayed in block fill mode, in
which case use the caret, '^', as the first character and include a tilde
anywhere in the fields after the first.
