In fact there not a lot of benefit for Oracle to end MySQL R&D. Monty (Michael Widenius), one of the founders of MySQL AB, left Sun in Feb 2009. He forked MySQL and founded MariaDB. With some portion of the $1B Sun paid for the MySQL acquisition in his pocket, he can grow the company and get many of the existing MySQL customers if Oracle kills of MySQL.
