Bandwidth is not the only measure for performance. Latency and number of messages per unit of time that can be handled are others. Especially the latter was the subject of a heated debate a few years ago on this list. -- You mean a Beowulf cluster composed of machines scattered around the city with trucks carrying boxes of 1 TB disk drives between processor nodes may not be an optimum architecture for fine grained parallelism? This configuration has very, very high data rate and bandwidth, but latency isn't so hot.
