Putting /home on the parallel filesystem isn't so much because I think my users are idiots. It's because I like to remove as many 'barriers to adoption' as possible and help them to 'cross the chasm' and become cluster users. I often get help e-mails from new users with error messages about not being able to access the executable on the compute nodes. This e-mail is often sent a Friday evening, so they have to wait until Monday morning for me to get back to them.
I try to do everything I can to make using clusters as easy as possible for my users. Once they get the hang of the basics and can run simple jobs, then I can worry about teaching them the difference in the performance of different filesystems, etc.
