One major writing project that I have often done with my sixth graders is to
write a persuasive essay persuading others to come over to their point of
view. (simplified here because of age) They must do research on the topic
and quote sources, do interviews, make posters, give presentations, etc.
Since they have met my dogs and know how I feel about them, popular topics
have been: "How to choose a puppy" "Where to get a puppy" "Is a Rescue dog
for you?" "Which breed is for you?" , etc. Then as a community project,
where the school invites anyone in our town to attend, they set up tables on
our huge playground and give talks to kids and parents about their topics.
It is heartwarming to see and hear ten and eleven year olds convincing other
youngsters and adults not to buy pups at pet stores, etc. You can never
start them too young. In fact, one of our local pet stores that used to sell
puppies, now has decided not to do so any more and instead runs training
sessions for kids with dogs, a direct result of the kids begging them not to
support puppy mills. I have retired and am recovering from surgery this
year, but I have continued working with the new 6th graders as a volunteer
for this project that is close to my heart. My dogs are in attendance at the
community presentation each year.
