Okay, here's a subject that seems to get a lot of people all 'het up' but
I'm going to put my two-cents in. I have had dogs all my life, a wide
variety of breeds including newfs and, now, a Berner. They ALL loved
chocolate. They ALL lived normal, healthy lives. I had a Newf do a raid on
my 3+ pounds of fudge I had bagged for gifts one Christmas - when we weren't
home, obviously, and, though he was a very thirsty dog and did develop
diarrhea, he was just fine. If there was any way chocolate should have
killed a dog, he was it. Perhaps there are some dogs, somewhere, that are
allergic to it and shouldn't have it, but none I've ever had. Our dogs (and
one cat, by the way) all beg for Hershey Kisses and I've never seen any
negative effects at all. I think carob is a sorry excuse for chocolate, so
don't use it and have no idea of how they like it or how it might effect
them.

I'm surprised that you don't seem to be getting any responses to this yet,
as I expected the experts to jump in with a quick response. I can only
assume people are responding through e-mail, but just in case, I thought I
would post the answer to your question.
I'm not an expert, but I can tell you that, as bad as chocolate may be for
your kids, it is far worse for your dog. Chocolate contains a chemical
called theobromine. This stuff is toxic for dogs, and potentially lethal in
sufficient quantity.
You can read more information about it at
http://www.supervet.co.uk/dog/chocolate.html or
http://www.vetheart.com/choc.html or
http://www.vetref.net/articles/_articles/chocolate.html.
Funny thing is, I actually have a book on dog breeds which suggests
chocolate as a good treat for dogs. Luckily, I knew before reading this book
that chocolate was very bad so I never gave chocolate to my dogs. Now, I
ignore all the advice in that book, and just look at the pictures of all the
different breeds of dogs.
