Hi,
Two things to consider, first being check her urine to see if she has a
urinary tract infection and/or if she is a bit sticky in the fur around her
vulva that is vaginitis which also makes puppy think she wants to urinate.
The second thing to consider is while you are training her she is training
you! I would suggest that you have a little walk prior to bedtime and/or do
some little obedience exercises so that she is tired and more inclined to
sleep through. We basically say one hour for every month of age is the
timeframe they'll sleep through before wanting to toilet. Puppies cannot
"hold it" until they are at least five months and some may be longer. When
you have those midnight outings do not play with her and minimal petting,
this is serious pee break time and nothing more. Is her crate next to your
bed? Is she getting overheated? If she is stressing out in her crate then
corral her in the bathroom or laundry room with some papers on the floor
and get a decent night's sleep and worry about crate training when she is
older.

Count up the hours in 24hours that she has to stay in her crate and then
work out if there is a boredom factor in it. If you both work and she is
crated in your absence add that to the nighttime hours and what you have is
the energiser bunny that needs more mental and physical exercise. See if
you can hire a puppy sitter or doggie daycare.

Subject: 2 am wake up

I have broached this subject before. My berner pup, now 14 weeks, wakes
up and begins barking and crying at 2AM. I am not what you would call a
late sleeper and am usually at work by 5AM. My wife and I have a sysytem
where she takes her out later at night and then I would take her out at
4AM. This was our plan, now it seems like a fantasy.
Every morning like clockwork she starts barking. We live in a condo so I
do not want her to keep barking. At first, when she was 10 weeks old I
would rush to put on my jacket to take her out. I soon learned going out
whats the last thing in her mind. When I try to take her out she lays on
her back and wants to be petted or play.
We have since set up her crate to be like an enclosed den at night. That
worked for a few nights. Now I just get up and talk to her at 2 AM and
give her a little water and try to get another hour nap on the couch.
This seems to work fine. Any suggestions? Terry Bering
