We have been treated to two Berner tricks recently. We're not really sure who is responsible for the first one, but since Holly is the devil in disguise we have our suspicions. Both Gandalf and Holly are BARF fed but there is a brand of dog food in Germany, Frolic, that comes in little chewy doughnut shapes about the size of a kibble. Cut into quarters these make great training treats and both dogs love them. We keep them in a shiny metal canister with a very tight fitting lid, both for freshness and security. Last week Christl was away from the house longer than usual so when she got home she did a sweep of the house checking for mischief. Both dogs were trotting right along side her (watcha doin' mom? Can we help?) a good sign that they have behaved. As she approached the kitchen both dogs found something very important to do outside and headed for the doggie door. There, in the middle of the kitchen floor, was the shiny metal canister with the lid off and the lid and an empty 2 kilo (a little more than 4 pounds) Frolic bag lying next to it. Here's the trick; the canister had been on a high shelf wedged in among several other items, nothing else on the shelf had been disturbed, no paw prints on the counter below the shelf, and not a single mark on the canister or it's lid, not even a trace of slobber! How on earth did they do that?
Second trick; Christl came home yesterday, as she is driving up to the house two doggie heads are looking out the window. When she opens the front door only Gandalf is there to do the wacky puppy dance (traditional Berner greeting). Holly is resting comfortably under the dining room table looking very nonchalant. Of course this triggers another sweep of the house. Gandalf escorts Christl while Holly heads for the doggie door. First bathroom Christl finds a cabinet door open but nothing on the floor and nothing inside appears to be disturbed. Second bathroom, same thing, third bathroom the same. As Christl, aided by Gandalf, is looking in the third cabinet trying to figure out what's up she suddenly remembers "hey wasn't there some toilet paper in here?" She turns around and heads outside only to discover Queen Holly perched regally on her throne of twelve rolls of toilet paper!
Think how dull life must be for people with no Berners!
