Hi Jenn, You're just going to have to time his feeding and bowel movement rituals and clean up promptly after him. Obviously your crate training efforts are not working and when leaving him I presume you are giving him plenty of opportunity to toilet outside first. Most puppies have a bowel movement fairly quickly after eating so that should be easy enough to clean up. Forget the crate for now and either set him up in a larger area or exercise pen and put papers down for accidents. Hopefully with a bit of distance to move away from his mess he might be less inclined to do his own house cleaning:-)
