No... thats the whole point of BBM. It uses data connection instead of SMS.
Its absurd that the cell companies charge $45 per month for "unlimited data" but that doesn't somehow include SMS. I've used the WhatsApp client that they mention in the article--its OK, but doesn't work as good as BBM. My wife recently moved from a BB to iPhone--and she tells me the only thing she misses is BBM.
