No... thats the whole point of BBM.  It uses data connection instead of SMS.  

Its absurd that the cell companies charge $45 per month for "unlimited data" 
but 
that doesn't somehow include SMS.

I've used the WhatsApp client that they mention in the article--its OK, but 
doesn't work as good as BBM.

My wife recently moved from a BB to iPhone--and she tells me the only thing she 
misses is BBM.  I miss it too--we have to SMS now instead of BBM each other, 
which was much easier, and free of course.

Depends on what they decide with the fee, otherwise users would just use 
Pingchat if the BES policies allow them to download it.
