Hi authors, I have to admit that I do not see how EVPN Ethernet A-D (Type 1) routes advertised by different EVI in the same PE or in different PEs can be suppressed by the BGP Best Path selection process.
RFC 7432 states that per-ES Ethernet A-D Routes MUST be advertised with Type 1 Route Distinguishers. This makes their suppression by the BGP Best Path selection process impossible. (Please note also that multiple per-ES Ethernet A-D routes with different Type 1 RDs MAY be advertised by the same PE if the number of Route Targets to be attached to these routes exceeds the maximum number of Extended Communities that can be stored in a single BGP UPDATE message). RFC 7432 also states that per-EVI Ethernet A-D Routes MUST be advertised with the Route Distinguisher assigned to the advertising MAC-VRF and RECOMMENDS assignment of Type 1 RDs to MAC-VRFs. If this recommendation is followed, suppression of these routes by the BGP Best Path selection process impossible. The bottom line: from my POV there is no need for twisting the BGP Path Selection process. What, if anything, did I miss?
