I've installed the qt beta on a win7 system without creating the temporary config directory. The jqt.cmd brings up the system very quickly. This early beta is much faster than the JGTK system on windows platforms. A very encouraging sign.
I've long noted that many first rank portable programs (TeXLive is a good example) use qt rather than GTK. Performance may be a big part of that.
