Aha: that explains it: I was expecting to see syntax highlighting right in the 
qtide J Term window while I composed a sentence there. Evidently the syntax 
highlighting is only for editing entire scripts.

This, of course, is a limitation of the entire paradigm of a console/terminal 
separate from an editor. I guess I'm just too spoiled by the "notebook" front 
end in Mathematica, where one can freely intermix text, graphics, expressions 
to be evaluated, etc., and evaluate what you type, no matter how long, in the 
same document/window.
