Actually, in my humble opinion, tiling is the task of the user's window
manager.
In MS Windows you can drag a window against the left or right side of the
screen (or do the equivalent with windows-key-left and right);  many Linux
window managers support the same mechanism. Others are really build around
the tiling concept (like wmii, ion3, dwm, xmonad, ...)
Interfering with standard window managment might actually harm the workflow
for people using those...

I like the snapshot idea of robert.
