My apologies for responding in the wrong forum. And I had assumed that the
display character was in unicode and not UTF-8. I searched jengine and
found a "see u:' but no other information.

It looks like the literal2 is actually UTF-16. This causes an interesting
situation as

   3 u: 7 u: 16b1f600

55357 56832

no longer gives the code point, but the UTF-16 numeric values of the two
wchars that the code point converts to. Shouldn't 3&u: convert back to the
code point? If not, is it possible to add a conversion to code point to u:
? Also, how about a u: way to convert to UTF-4? This would restore the one
character per atom which is no longer the case for 7&u: . OK, so that makes
for 32 bit characters. But that is what IBM had in APL2.

A second question: The smiley face (😀) doesn't display on Windows J Qt IDE
1.4.9/5.4.2 . Instead it shows up a square box. However, the smiley face is
there. It's just that Qt doesn't display it.
