Your last report indicates the problem probably isn't with starting the browser, but is a problem in starting a terminal to run jconsole.
In a command shell, what is the result of: ...$ which x-terminal-emulator This should report the command to start a terminal for jconsole/JHS. Usually this will be something like: /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator which then does some magic to run your desired emulator.
